I am seeking a position teaching Social Studies and/or Sociology at the secondary level. As a graduate of Michigan State University, I have intern teaching experience at the seventh, eighth, and tenth grade levels in both suburban and urban school districts. Presently I am completing my internship at DeWitt Junior High School in Dewitt, Michigan. This position enables me to work with a diverse group of students who all come to me with unique backgrounds. I am challenged every day to develop creative lessons, teach, and nurture these students in developing their knowledge and social skills.
I am a Michigan State University graduate certified in social studies (RX) and sociology. My major is History and my minor is sociology. I have a passion for social studies and competence in the Michigan Content standards and expectations. I would bring a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine care for students to your school district.
History and world cultures has always been a passion for me. I think learning about different times of history and cultures is one of the most meaningful learning experiences youth can get because it gives them a new perspective on the world that they had not previously thought of. In perusing my love for culture, I have spent the last two summers traveling Europe and experiencing different cultures. I intend to being this experience and global view into my classroom as a social studies teacher.
My internship year has only further enhanced my love for teaching. I have had the pleasure of working with a mentor teacher who has thirty seven years experience and has taught me many things as well as challenged me on a daily basis. I have had the opportunity to develop creative lesson plans and independently teach both the seventh and the eighth grades.
I believe the role of Social Studies in schools should be to give students the tools to understand the world around them and that studying the world through a global perspective can only further enhance students knowledge of their own world and develop the tools to think critically about content knowledge and their world.
It is my goal to bring my beliefs, skills, and enthusiasm to your school district in order to make a positive learning environment for the students and contribution to your school district. Attached to this letter is a copy of my teaching philosophy, resume, and references. Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Janell Lewis
